People with disabilities are vulnerable to becoming trapped in a state of poverty, particularly in societies where there is little or no safety net, the stigma around disability is ever-present and the barriers to work are already high. The medical costs associated with living with disability put huge financial pressures on families with disabled children. This burden is exasperated in single parent households or when one or both parents cannot find work, often due to responsibility to care for a disabled child.
WJR supports programmes that work towards the inclusion of people with disabilities in mainstream society, through basic social support, increased access to education as well as physical access to community buildings.
Our projects aim both to relieve the pressures on families of children with disabilities and assist children and adults to be as independent as possible.
