Unity, Kharkov, Ukraine

Unity works through, and with, municipally run centres for the elderly. It has permission to run programmes to help the vulnerable, children and impoverished elderly in Oktyaberky Region, Kharkov.

The centre currently helps 1,600 disabled and elderly people. The centre has four departments:

• Home care
• Day care - for 30 people at a time
• Humanitarian assistance
• Social-psychological department for rehabilitation of children with disabilities

The municipality recognises that it has insufficient resources, and so allows Unity to raise funds and run programmes for its local centres. The WJR grant will cover the food and transportation costs.
