This scheme enables 17,517 Jews to use specially-designed supermarket debit cards to purchase basic foodstuffs.
On average, £29 is allocated each month to a family of three people, which covers basic nutritional needs, freeing up meagre resources to cover bills, medical costs and other essentials.
The provision of debit cards not only ensures that these “New Poor” do not suffer from hunger; it also affords them the ability to maintain their dignity by purchasing food themselves and not relying on distribution of food packages or hot meals.
