KEY FACTS

This programme is set up to address the needs of orphaned and abandoned children, those living at risk and in economically unstable conditions.

It includes children of various ages, from babies to teenagers, and living in countries such as Ukraine, Argentina and South Africa - countries where your help is desperately needed.

Children in desperate need.

There are children living in desperate circumstances all over the world, and they need our urgent help. Hundreds of abandoned children are condemned to a life on the streets while others exist in sub-human conditions in state orphanages. Some live with their parents but their situation is still so dire they rely on our basic packages of food for survival.

The plight of abandoned children knows no religious, racial or physical boundaries so our work is spread across the world throughout Jewish communities and beyond. Fortunately, you can help us break this self-perpetuating cycle of poverty through Sponsor a Child.

See the difference.

Your money will help feed, clothe and support a child for an entire year. You'll also receive regular progress reports every six months, including letters and drawings from a child benefitting from this programme, so that you can see how you're helping with your donation and get a sense for the difference you are making.

Shelma's story

Shelma is six years old. He has lived alone with his ailing grandmother since his parents abandoned him and moved to Israel in search of a better life. Shelma arrived at the Zaparozhye Home after an old neighbour learnt of the conditions he was living in. Shelma suffers from stomach problems as a result of malnutrition. He is a quiet, shy boy, often nervous and takes a while to warm to people. He is a very hard worker and tries his best at all times. Shelma loves to paint. We hope that in time, Shelma's health improves and that with an abundance of unconditional love he will blossom and grow into a confident young man.

Patience's story

Patience is twelve. She is in Year 7 at school. She has lived with her uncle since her mother died. He has no work so life is hard at home and they live on handouts. The school Patience attends receives funding from WJR which provides Patience with an education and porridge to eat, usually her only meal of the day. There is not often food at home and she doesn't remember when she last ate vegetables as her uncle has no land and the house is not theirs. WJR can help Patience by providing her with food to sustain her and an education that will help fulfil her dream of becoming a primary school teacher.
