Bulawayo, Zimbabwe's second city, has a population of 1.5 million, of which around 100 are Jews.
Most are elderly, with 23 residing at Savyon Lodge, a Jewish Old Age Home. The average age of the home's residents i 86.
Residents have their own private rooms, receive three meals a day and care is provided by trained nurses and nurse aides.
Receiving no government subsidy, the home is funded entirely by residents' charges, investments and donations from the local community and abroad. Conditions in Zimbabwe necessitate regular trips over the border to stock up on locally unavailable food and medical supplies. WJR's grant contributes towards provision of food, fuel for generators and medical supplies.
In 2009-10, WJR's grant contributes towards provision of food and medical supplies for 22 residents in the old people's home. WJR is also covering for the cost of a physiotherapist from the UK to spend two weeks in Zimbabwe training staff in modern therapies. Other projects in Zimbabwe will also benefit from this training.
