In 2005 WJR adopted Krivoy Rog as one its 'Our Town' projects. In doing so, WJR committed to support the community of Krivoy Rog, and later in 2005 purchased the building which is now Beit Graham, the Krivoy Rog Jewish Community Centre. The purpose of the building is to provide a central point for all welfare and cultural services provided to the Jewish community.
There are around 15,000 Jewish people living in Krivoy Rog, and, until the time that the centre was purchased, there had been no focal point for this community. Once a significant centre of Jewish life, the Jews in Krivoy Rog lost almost all ties to their heritage during the Soviet era. However, since the early 1990s, WJR's goal has been to provide welfare services to impoverished elderly Jews and to help Jews renew their link to Jewish life and build a strong communal structure. The town's Jewish community are now increasingly reclaiming their Jewish heritage, and the new JCC will further encourage this and revitalise the community.
The JCC houses Krivoy Rog's Hesed centre (welfare) and children's services. The Hesed caters for the elderly and those with disabilities, providing services ranging from welfare to education. The JCC also provides educational and fun programmes for anyone from the Jewish community and those wishing to learn more about the Jewish way of life. With disabled access, areas for simchas, a children's centre and holistic welfare support, the Krivoy Rog Jewish community will now have the opportunity to grow, strengthen and flourish.
In 2009-10 WJR is supporting the running costs of Beit Graham.
