WJR Street Kids programme -- Rwanda
SACCA provides homes and assistance for former and current street-living and working children in Kayonza and Kabarondo, Rwanda.
The programme provides a holistic method of support for current and former street living/working children in Eastern Province. It provides support through its three out-of-home care centres and a network of social workers. Alongside the out-of-home centres, run a successful reintegration programme that aims to return children to their families, a semi-independent living programme that helps older children integrate into their communities and and educational programme.
There are currently 88 children in the three centres and a further 141 children are helped as part of the integration and reintegration programme. It is anticipated that a further 200 children will receive assistance from the programme over the course of the year. More than 50 children will benefit from the CBPS (Community Based Prevention of Separation) projects already running. The programme maintains follow-up contact with 76 children who have left the centres.
In 2009-10, the WJR grant funds running costs for the three centres, education, income generation projects, social work and reintegration, pastoral support for the CBPS programme and a donation towards central office and salary expenses.
