Nepal’s civil war (1996-2006, the Maoist communists wished to create a ‘People’s Republic of Nepal’) has taken over 13,000 lives on both sides and has prevented the delivery of basic services throughout the country. Between 100,000 and 150,000 people were internally displaced during the ten year war. The government has traditionally held the towns, while the Maoists were stronger in the provinces. Development has been delayed and there has been a breakdown of family and community networks throughout the country. The impact is felt most by women and children.
