Indonesia Earthquake Appeal

Two major earthquakes hit the island of Sumatra, in Indonesia, on Wednesday 30 September and during the early hours of the following morning. Over 1,100 were confirmed dead, thousands were injured and at least 190,000 people required urgent assistance. World Jewish Relief, the primary humanitarian aid agency of the UK Jewish community, launched an urgent appeal to assist those affected.

50% of Padang city was reported to have been destroyed, with several hundred schools among a total of more than 20,000 buildings and 260,000 homes destroyed or badly damaged by the earthquake.

To date, your generous donations have enabled us to distribute 71 water kits, to those in desperate need in Kota Padang, Pariaman and Agam districts; each of which covers the needs of 10 families for a month, thus providing urgent relief for approximately 3,550 people. Each kit contains buckets, soap and water treatments, which are desperately required to prevent the spread of disease due to poor sanitation and damaged water systems.

Your support has also allowed us to provide cash grants to 1,000 elderly residents and their families. This will cover the basic needs of these families and so assist with the next phase in the rehabilitation process. The grants will enable 1,000 families in the Padang Pariaman and Parak Buruk districts to purchase food and vital household items for one month and give elderly individuals a sense of dignity after the horrors of the earthquake.
