WJR launches Congo Emergency Appeal
With more than 200,000 people forced from their homes by intense fighting in eastern Congo (DRC), WJR is today launching an Emergency Appeal for funds to help those affected by this conflict which is destroying lives daily.
Following five years of war that ended in 2003, a new spate of fighting threatens to destabilise eastern Congo (DRC) and the wider region. In October alone, 20,000 people abandoned their homes and are searching for shelter, food, water and safety. Many of those who have been living in IDP (Internally Displaced Persons) camps following previous violence have fled in fear, and it is reported that the camps around Rutshuru have been forcibly sacked and emptied. Some IDPs are moving north to Uganda, others south, in search of relief. Tens of thousands continue to roam the region, hoping to find safety.
As of 1 November, Goma was held by government troops while rebel troops hold Rutshuru. A ceasefire appears to be holding for the time being. While the ceasefire holds, humanitarian agencies that had temporarily pulled out of the region are looking at ways to provide assistance to IDPs. WJR is now able to launch its Emergency Appeal and will work closely with trusted partners to ensure that donations are well and properly spent.
Whilst continually monitoring the situation to ascertain where the need is greatest and how best to alleviate it, WJR is now calling on the UK Jewish community to support its work through trusted partners, to provide emergency assistance for those affected in the region.
Paul Anticoni, Chief Executive of WJR said:
"The situation in Eastern Congo is shocking and the numbers of people fleeing in the wake of the conflict are growing daily. We are calling on the community here in the UK to help us make a difference to those in desperate need in the region. We cannot stand by and do nothing."
