Tri for Life raises £100,000
Last Sunday (6 September 2009), over 1,500 spectators and 800 participants flocked to Dorney Lake near Eton, Windsor - a 2012 Olympic venue - for the Tri for Life trialthlon, raising a remarkable £100,000 for nine charities.
Following the success of last year's inaugural event, this year's triathlon provided participants with the opportunity to compete alongside England champion Lawrence Dallaglio and football pundit Robbie Earle, as well as elite athletes Mike Trees and Richard Stannard.
More than 700 adults completed either the short or long distance race, while 100 children between the ages of four and eight took part in Tri for Life's first ever Scootathlon.
The event raised over £10,000 for WJR.
Commentating on his involvement, Lawrence Dallaglio said: "I'm delighted to be supporting nine charities benefiting from the triathlon. What better to do than get up on a Sunday morning and swim, cycle and run for nine great causes, including WJR."
Now in its second year, the event is run by premier Triathlon event organisers Human Race, which aims to make challenge events more accessible to novices as well as experienced athletes. The triathlon provided the opportunity to compete individually, conquering all three disciplines, or as part of a three person relay team, each completing one of the three activities - bike ride, swim or run. The shorter distance consists of a 400m swim, 20km cycle and 5km run. The longer distance consists of a 800m swim, 30km cycle and 7.5km run.
