Zimbabwe Update
KEY FACTS
WJR supports Savyon Lodge, a Jewish old age home in Bulawayo.
Over the coming year, WJR will also be supporting an old age home in a Bulawayo township, as well as Zimbabwean orphans and vulnerable children affected by HIV/AIDS.
Zimbabwe is currently hitting the headlines due to the uncertain political situation, poor harvests and a failing economy. Inflation is wildly out of control - rising by around 10% each day. Around 80% of the population is unemployed while those with a job find that their monthly salary stretches to around three loaves of bread - making the most basic goods unobtainable. Any savings that people had are worthless, and many are now completely desperate. WJR is doing its best to help children and the elderly in Zimbabwe.
WJR supports Savyon Lodge, a Jewish old age home in Bulawayo. The aid from WJR allows the staff from the home to travel to South Africa to purchase food, medical equipment and fuel for the generator. There are currently 22 residents in the home, each receiving three meals a day. In addition to the full range of services offered to residents, local staff are provided with daily meals and are offered bread to take home to share with their own families.
Over the coming year, WJR will be providing running costs for an old age home in a Bulawayo township. WJR will also be working to assist Zimbabwean orphans and vulnerable children affected by HIV/AIDS, helping to improve a centre for them with somewhere to play, feel safe and receive counselling and basic provisions.
The future looks very bleak for millions in Zimbabwe but our support, however modest, is a vital lifeline for those we can help.
