Statement about the China earthquake
The earthquake that hit China's Sichuan province on Monday has caused massive loss of life, injured thousands and left many homeless. The Government of China’s response has been swift and massive. The mobilisation of vast numbers of rescue workers, police and volunteers on a scale that only China can do, has demonstrated the capability of this immense population. While there remain people still trapped and without access to assistance, this is not a result of shortage of manpower, expertise or materials. While China has welcomed foreign aid (and indeed invited some foreign journalists into the affected area) it has been cautious about requiring additional international assistance given its capabilities and resource availabilities. China’s swift, willing, professional mobilisation of assistance has been welcomed by the International Community. As a result WJR is not launching an emergency appeal but will monitor the situation.
Our emergency attention remains focused on the needs of those affected by Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar.
