Gemini Committee raise £10,000 for WJR
KEY FACTS
Some of the proceeds from Sunday’s Supper Quiz will be put towards the Krivoy Rog Community Centre in Ukraine, which when completed, will support the population of 12,000-15,000 Jewish people living in the city
The remaining funds from the event will go towards WJR’s unique Gifts in Kind (GiK) humanitarian aid programme, which sends donations of new and nearly new goods to deprived communities abroad
On Sunday (13.4.08), 287 people gathered at St John’s Wood Synagogue for a Supper Quiz in aid of WJR - raising a remarkable £10,000 for the charity.
Following last year’s success, the evening was planned by WJR’s Gemini Committee, a team of volunteers who focus on engaging the community through social events.
Some of the proceeds from Sunday’s Supper Quiz will be put towards the Krivoy Rog Community Centre in Ukraine, which when completed, will support the population of 12,000-15,000 Jewish people living in the city through educational, recreational and welfare activities. Much of Krivoy Rog’s population suffers medically due to the pollution cause by mining and the majority of WJR’s clients are living in dilapidated buildings with broken windows, minimal heating and electricity with limited access to state aid.
The remaining funds from the event will go towards WJR’s unique Gifts in Kind (GiK) humanitarian aid programme, which sends donations of new and nearly new goods to deprived communities abroad. Last year, GiK sourced, sorted and boxed over £3.5m worth of critical goods – items such as warm clothing, footwear, dried food and bedding - which are sent directly to needy recipients in Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union.
Ian Crooke, Chairman of the Supper Quiz Committee, commented;
“It was a hugely successful event both socially and financially and the work of the Gemini committee was outstanding. We’re delighted to have raised this money for WJR.”
