Rosh Hashanah should be a happy time of reflection, renewal and thanksgiving alongside family and friends. But for vulnerable Jewish people in the former Soviet Union, it heralds a time, as temperatures start to plummet, when a hot meal or an extra layer of clothing can be the difference between survival and death.
ContinuedOne month on from the initial heavy flood waters a second wave of flooding has moved into southern Sindh displacing an additional 1 million people. Floodwaters are reported to be receding in Rajanpur, Muzaffargarh and D G Kan districts (the worst affected areas) but with the Indus River raging at 40 times its normal volume, the largest sea surge of water now in the Thatta District of Pakistan's southern Sindh Province. A complicating factor is an unusually high tide in the Arabian Sea, which is preventing flood waters from draining into the ocean.
